Austin has Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that weakens the body's connective tissue.
It was a moment of recognition and emotion as Austin wiped away tears and embraced NBA Commissioner Adam Silver at the NBA Draft Thursday. Austin is honored, even though playing in the NBA will not be part of his future.
"We wanted to make sure that he fulfilled at least this part of his dream," Silver said at the ceremony.
"I was devastated, really," Austin said. "It's hard to get information like that, especially since I was - had been working so hard up to this point."
Austin, who played for Baylor University, now hopes to spread the word about his story and Marfan Syndrome.
Dr. Elizabeth McNally has patients with Marfans and runs the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic at University of Chicago Medicine.
"Marfan's is a protein that affects a lot of different support structures within the body,"McNally said. "It affects blood vessels, the eyes, the bony skeleton."
In fact, Austin has had problems with one retina since middle school, and he's partially blind. With Marfan Syndrome, the heart is also a concern, especially the aorta.
"You can have a weakening of that blood vessel, a dilation or enlargement of that blood vessel, and then in the worst case, the rupture of the aorta can be a life-threatening event," McNally said.
In 1986, Olympian Flo Hyman collapsed on the volleyball court and later died as a result of a ruptured aorta. She was just 31. At age 20, Austin is tackling the challenge by looking ahead.
"I'm just hoping to touch people's lives and let them know that any obstacle they are facing they can get through it," Austin said. "All they have to do is keep a positive mind and thank God for every moment they are on this earth."

SAO PAULO Michael Bradley wasn't very good against Ghana, something that was apparent in real time to anyone who knows the midfielder's typical game. He wasn't precise. He struggled with pressure. His passes were off. He didn't impact play enough.
Postgame film study only confirmed the obvious and highlighted the issue: The U.S. was probably lucky to win 2-1 in Natal with arguably its most important player struggling. At the very least, no one wants to try it again, namely Sunday against Portugal (6 p.m. ET).
That includes Michael Bradley himself.
"I'm certainly honest enough and hard enough on myself to know it wasn't my sharpest night," Bradley said.
Victory in their World Cup opener concealed all sorts of shortcomings for the Americans. That isn't unusual. There are no perfect games and the U.S. isn't the kind of team that is going to deliver many if any that come close. This is a team that must grind.

Still, in order to do that the U.S. needs Bradley, perhaps more than any player, to be at his peak.
One of the chief issues against Ghana was how the U.S. sat back and tried to nurse an early 1-0 lead, losing possession and only occasionally producing a meaningful counter attack. It eventually lost the lead only to seize it back courtesy of a Graham Zusi's corner kick and John Brooks' header in the 86th minute.
Thrilling, fun game. But not a blueprint for continued success.
It's the play in the midfield that will go the farthest to delivering the transition from defense to the pressing attack that coach Jurgen Klinsmann desperately wants.
"In any big game, the battle that goes on in midfield is so important," Bradley said. "It goes such a long way to determine who wins the game."
That means Bradley. He simply has to be better. On Friday, prior to the team's last practice here before heading to the heat of Manaus up in the Amazon rainforest, he wasn't backing down from the issue.
"Unfortunately they are not all going to be [my best games]," Bradley said of his struggles. "On those days it's still about finding every possible way to help your team and I think as a team we realized at a certain point it wasn't going to be a night for making a million passes or necessarily playing the most beautiful soccer. It was about running and tackling and making the game hard on Ghana."

This is a different Michael Bradley from four years ago. Back then, the product of Palatine, Ill., was reserved in front of the media and still finding his way. He was just 22 and his father Bob was the U.S. team's coach. His potential was evident. His comfort was not so easy to spot.
Now he's an unquestioned team leader, not just one of the best players. He's spent the ensuing years playing professionally in Germany, England and Italy, most notably for powerhouse Roma, before coming back to Major League Soccer this year with Toronto FC. He got married and has a young daughter. He's in the prime of his career.
Whatever it is, he was calm, rational and philosophic about his play.
He cited the natural mistake but a mistake nonetheless of sitting back a bit after Clint Dempsey's goal just 30 seconds into the game. The Americans in general, and Bradley himself, just never got into the groove of how they anticipated playing.
"I think we more than anything just struggled to get out of that mold of defending and protecting," Bradley said. "We did such a good job into that, so much energy into that, that at the right moments we weren't sharp enough.
"We weren't able to find the right pass, we weren't able to give the game a little bit of pause and put the game back onto our terms," he continued.

That likely won't fly against Portugal. While so much of the pregame talk has been focused on brilliant forward Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the standard ways to slow, or even stop, the star forward is to win the battles in the middle of the field and deny him the ball. Or even better, turn it the other way for an attack that is far from him.
That will mean a great deal of Bradley vs. Joao Moutinho, Portugal's excellent midfielder.
Bradley is well aware of all of this. He can only figure it is best that he got a subpar game out of the way and the U.S. won anyway. There really isn't much more he could say. He stepped up, acknowledged it and didn't bother with some empty promise of playing better. He just said he'd try. He just said he'd do, once again, everything possible to win, even if again he isn't at his best.
"You obviously can't pick and choose but, still, you never want to play your best game first," he said. "You want to feel like as the tournament is moving on and the tournament is progressing the team and every guy is continuing to grow and get better and get stronger."
Michael Bradley needs to be better, needs to be stronger. Everyone around U.S. Soccer knows it, including the guy growing into stardom yet honest and confident enough to acknowledge he still isn't quite there yet.

Once we won that first game of the San Jose series, we kind of had a feeling we were going to come back and win that series, he said. And you could see it in their eyes, in their team, in their captains and leaders that they were worried about us coming back. So we dont want to give these guys any life.
Theyre a good hockey team. Theyre here in the Stanley Cup Final for a reason and we cant let them back in this series. We need to win tonight. This games the most important game of our lives, of this season, especially. Its a must-win.

Basically the distractions last time were trying to get tickets for certain people. There werent enough tickets and just kind of stuff like that going on, he said. We just talked about it as a group and we just said, let the families deal with it. Get your mom in charge. Get your wife in charge, whatever it needs to be, and completely forget about that.
Rather than having to go for breakfast with them or something like that just focus on the team. You have a lot of time to see your family and friends after we hopefully win and right now its just focusing on this game.
Doughty said his parents, his billet parents the couple whose home he lived in while he played junior hockey and his girlfriend would be at Wednesdays game but he wont see them until afterward.

Speculation based on seating order at the recent Star Wars read-through and preconceptions about Han and Leias inevitable offspring hinted that Ridley will play their teenaged daughter and perhaps be the keystone to Episode VIIs story. But what of Nyongo and Christie? Who might they play? And does the fact that they were not part of the first round of casting announcements indicate that theyre background players and not essential personnel?
Based on the popular profile and pedigree of both actresses, its unlikely that either Nyongo or Christie will be relegated to Lobot or Cantina-dancer status. And though Lucasfilm has announced that the Expanded Universe is no longer gospel not that it ever technically was the studio is not against plucking favorite characters and storylines from previous material. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded, Lucasfilm said back in April. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. With that in mind, here are three hopeful character possibilities for both actresses, based entirely on wishful thinking.
Gwendoline Christie
1. Christie plays the heroic warrior Brienne of Tarth on HBOs Game of Thrones, and shes not just tall, shes tall. Six-foot-three tall. Traditionally in Star Wars, tall means evil, from Darth Vader to Christopher Lees Count Dooku (and, potentially, to Adam Driver) so Christie might play an imposing villain. In the novels, Palpatine had several dark-force operatives who werent necessarily apprentices that he used for assassination and intrigue called the Emperors Hand. Mara Jade, who ultimately married Luke Skywalker, was the most famous of them, though Christies relative youth makes that option unlikely. But she couldve been a child acolyte of Palpatine like the tall Lumiya one whos ready to exact revenge now on Skywalker and the New Republic.
2. The planet of Dathomir is home to the Nightsisters, Force-sensitive alpha-females that ride rancors, the beasts that Jabba the Hutt kept in his dungeon. (Fans of The Clone Wars know that Asajj Ventress came from Dathomir). In several of the post-ROTJ novels, the Nightsistersaligned with the remnants of the Empire and the Sith, but in general, they were formidable wild cards who fought for their own interests. Christie would make a fine Tamith Kai, who kidnapped Han and Leias children in the Young Jedi Knights stories. Or she could play Augwynne Djo, the leader of a more peaceful Dathomirian clan of witches. Either way, I like the idea of visiting Dathomir.
3. Heightdoesnt have to indicate malevolence. After all, Mons Mothma (pictured above) was a tall, regal leader of the Rebel Alliance in ROTJ. Theres a slight physical resemblance between Christie and actress Carolina Blakiston. Might Christie be Mothmas daughter, a leader of the New Republic?
Lupita Nyongo
1. With Billy Dee Williams the biggest star from the original trilogy whos missing from the new cast list, its an inevitable leap to suspect that either Nyongo or John Boyega have some Calrissian blood flowing in their veins. Personally, Id prefer the latter, with Landos son part of a love triangle that involves Hans daughter. But Nyongo could also be Landos heir, either a leader in the New Republic or a successful galactic entrepreneur.
2. Nyongo emanates grace that borders on nobility, so shed be a perfect Tenal Ka, the Jedi-in-training with royal blood. In the books, the character has a long and fascinating arc that is tightly intertwined with both generations of Star Wars characters. Tenal Ka also hails from Dathomir, so that planet has the potential to be this trilogys Tatooine or Coruscant.
3. Id wince if Nyongo is doomed to be a Star Wars woman of color that is, the blue or green-skinned Twilek with head tentacles and halter tops. But its also difficult to imagine her as a villain or a rogue bounty hunter. She does, however, have aphysical resemblance to the aforementioned Asajj Ventress, one of the Expanded Universes most popular wild-card characters.
