There's a "hole" lot of happy going on. Today is the first Friday in June -- also known as National Doughnut Day.
Started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938, the day honors the Army's "Donut Lassies" who served treats and provided assistance to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.
Be sure to stop by a Dunkin' Donuts, where they're giving away a doughnutwith any beverage purchase, or a Krispy Kreme, which is offering a free doughnut of any variety with no purchase necessary. Donut Connection may be participating too, depending on the location.
Or, celebrate by supporting a local independent doughnutshop.
The Pittsburgh area has some great ones, like Peace, Love & Little Donuts in Oakland, the Strip or Indiana Township; Better-Maid Donut Co. on Steuben Street in Elliott; Big Daddy's Donuts in Crafton; and Oram's Donut Shop in Beaver Falls. (Don't forget your local neighborhood bakery, either.)
Doughnuts have been around since long before the first World War, and we have the Dutch to thank. They would make "olykoek," which translates to oily cake. The first ones didn't have a hole, but they were fried in hot oil and the dough was sweet.
Nowadays, doughnuts come in so many flavors that you're sure to find one you love. What's your favorite? And equally important, what do you drink with it?
