Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN): The Best Stock to Miss Earnings

Today (Thursday) after closing bell, Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) revealed Q4 earnings that missed analysts' aggressive estimates that growth would increase 238% from a year prior.

Instead, AMZN earnings per share came in at $0.51 on sales of $25.59 billion, $0.15 below the consensus $0.66 per share on sales of $26.06 billion.

There are a few reasons why Amazon's miss today should actually signal a buy for investors.

First, Amazon has missed nine of the last sixteen quarters; in Q3, revenue fell year over year, breaking a three-quarter streak of rising revenue.

Yet, AMZN investors have seen the stock go up more than 40% over the last year.

Second, today's earnings actually still represent a 148% increase in EPS from a year ago - $0.21 per diluted share in Q4 2012 versus $0.51 per diluted share in today's Q4 2013.

Third, for the full year of 2013, net sales increased 22% to $74.45 billion, compared with $61.09 billion in 2012. Amazon reports that the number actually would've been a 24% increase, if not for the negative impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates.

In Q4 alone, net sales increased 20% to $25.59 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with $21.27 billion in fourth quarter 2012.

Fourth, Amazon announced a record-setting holiday season for Amazon Prime (it didn't provide numbers). In December, Prime became so popular that Amazon was forced to limit new Prime membership signups during peak periods for the first time ever.

AMZN stock is paying the price for missing earnings - it's plunged over 8.5% in after-hours trading, from a close of $403.01 to $369 as of 4:55 pm EST.

But the Amazon stock drop creates a unique opportunity for investors to get in on this company at a discount.

Why Amazon Earnings Miss Doesn't Matter

The key to Amazon's success is innovation.

"These guys leave no stones unturned for the next dollar they can bring in," said Money Morning Defense & Tech Specialist Michael A. Robinson. "Amazon is constantly upselling, cross-selling, and looking for new products, and they're great at it."

Amazon is one of the world's largest online retailers, but it also creates original media content in its publishing division, offers cloud services, and sells products like the popular Kindle.

Popular is an understatement: On Dec. 26, Amazon announced it sold 426 items per second on 2013's Cyber Monday, including more Kindles than ever before in the company's history. That comes out to more than 36.8 million items ordered in 24 hours.

Also in late December, Amazon won a patent for a shipping method that could drastically decrease shipping times...

"They already do anticipatory shopping - customers see that every time they open the web page. Now they want to expand that to anticipatory shipping," said Robinson.

With the patent, AMZN will strengthen its spot as the No. 1 online retailer by boasting some of the fastest delivery times for online purchases.

Another major reason for AMZN's success... Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is a membership service that offers free two-day shipping, unlimited movie streaming, and one free borrowed e-book per month for a total of $79 per year. In just one week in December, Amazon Prime gained more than 1 million new subscribers. Now we know, post-earnings, that Prime is alive and well - and setting records all on its own.

Additionally in December we learned that AMZN will launch Pantry, a membership warehouse that allows members to buy consumer package goods. Pantry opens the gateway for Amazon to compete with Costco Wholesale Corp. (Nasdaq: COST), Sam's Club, and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT).

Robinson believes developing Pantry fits right in Amazon's wheelhouse and credits a lot of the company's success to Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos.

Bezos is "brilliant at logistics," said Robinson. "[He] is going to go down in history as one of the great tech innovators of all time."

Amazon stock went up a whopping 62% in 2013 - and will keep going.

"Once this franchise is built out, there are billions of dollars in cash flow that will fall to the bottom line," Robinson said.

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is suing Gawker Media and related entities based on Gawker allegedly assisting in the distribution of a stolen film script:

Director Quentin Tarantino has filed a lawsuit against Gawker Media for copyright infringement. A week after declaring he would no longer make his next film The Hateful Eight because someone in his small circle had leaked the screenplay, director Quentin Tarantino has taken legal action against Gawker Media alleging copyright infringement for disseminating the script

Tarantinos lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Monday, alleges that the web site Gawker disseminated unauthorized downloadable copies of the leaked unreleased complete screenplay and expressly refused to remove their directions to and URL links to get the infringing materials. The director is demanding actual and statutory damages as well as Gawkers profits in the amount of at least $1 million.

Gawker Media has made a business of predatory journalism, violating peoples rights to make a buck, the complaint states. This time, they went too far. Rather than merely publishing a news story reporting that Plaintiffs screenplay may have been circulating in Hollywood without his permission, Gawker Media crossed the journalistic line by promoting itself to the public as the first source to read the entire screenplay illegally.

Not being a fan either of Tarantinos films, or of Gawker, I consider myself neutral.

I read the Complaint. All Gawker did was promote the fact that it had links to others on the internet who had the script. That seems like a tough claim of copyright liability, but hey, presumably the plaintiffs lawyers did the reasearch and think they have a legal claim. But still, just linking to others creates a copyright liability? Yikes, if thats true.

Gawker is promising a fight:

Gawker had nothing to do with the appearance of The Hateful Eight script on the internet.

Tarantinos complaint includes the following claim: Gawker Media itself for its own benefit, itself transmitted or encouraged an infringing unauthorized full copy of the Screenplay to be posted for download on the obscure file share website AnonFiles.com. This claim is false. No one at Gawker saw or had access to Tarantinos script before AnonFiles posted it. No one at Gawker transmitted itor anything else, at allto AnonFiles. No one at Gawker encouraged anyone to do so. No one at Gawker has any earthly idea how AnonFiles obtained a copy.

Gawker is not being sued for copyright infringement.

We are being sued for contributory copyright infringement for linking to a site that is being sued for direct copyright infringement. We are not being sued for publishing copyrighted information.

Contributory infringement is a legal theory that has traditionally been deployed against file-sharing sites and search enginesvenues that explicitly exist as directories to copyrighted content. Gawker and Defamer are news sites, and our publication of the link was clearly connected to our goal of informing readers about things they care about. As far as I can tell (but Im no lawyer!), no claim of contributory infringement has prevailed in the U.S. over a news story. Well be fighting this one.

SAN ANTONIO Sleet, snow and freezing rain warnings prompted overnight closures and delays at area school districts, government offices and the airport Thursday and into Friday morning.

A strong winter storm blanketed South Central Texas, forcing the temperature in San Antonio from the morning's mid-50s to the low-30s by evening and dropping.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s and low 30s Friday morning and will only rise to the lower 40s at most, said Jon W. Zeitler, science and operations officer for the National Weather Service's Austin and San Antonio office.

The wintry mix of precipitation should end around noon Friday, Zeitler said.

Meteorologists are predicting up to 1 inch of snow in the Hill Country. Accumulation mostly will occur north of San Antonio, Zeitler said.

Other areas should only see a dusting, he wrote in a statement.

Thin ice will form on bridges, overpasses, car roofs and windshields, but well-traveled roads should be in good condition.

By 9 p.m. Thursday, several bridges across Bexar County were beginning to ice over. The Texas Department of Transportation had monitored road conditions throughout the day. The Ice Plan Command Post at TransGuide was activated at 6 p.m. and crews began responding to icy conditions later in the evening.

By 10 p.m., the Interstate 10 and Loop 410 interchange, along with the U.S. 281 connection to Loop 1604 and the connector from U.S. 281 North to the airport were shut down due to ice. CPS Energy reported just under 8,000 customers affected by power outages caused by cold weather and wind. Crews rushed across the city to restore power to the hardest hit areas which included the West and Northwest Sides. Outages also were reported in the Southeast Side.

TxDOT advised drivers Thursday to stay at home during sleet and freezing rain. If people must drive, the department advised them to go slow and follow other vehicles at three times the normal distance.

Drivers should use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas, which tend to freeze first, TxDOT said.

Most Bexar County school districts planned to send drivers out around 3 a.m. Friday to monitor road conditions and make a decision by 5 a.m. on whether to open schools. If schools close, they'll notify parents using local news media and their websites, Facebook and Twitter pages, parent robocall systems and in some cases, a phone tree of their employees.

School districts in the area have encouraged parents to check the websites of their children's schools for information on closures or delays. An updated list is also available on mySA.com.

Bexar County has asked all non-essential employees to start their day at 10 a.m. Friday.

Dozens of flights to and from San Antonio International Airport were canceled as the chill rolled in.

We anticipate that as we progress into the evening we'll see more, airport spokeswoman Nora Castro said while urging travelers to monitor their flight status through Friday morning for changes.

As of late Thursday afternoon, the majority of cancelations were arrivals, but Castro expected more canceled departures because of dropping temperatures and anticipated precipitation. The airport was preparing to treat runway and taxiway surfaces for ice.

She suggested affected travelers try to reschedule flights as soon as possible, saying there would be a lot of demand as travelers rebook once the storm passes.

The airport also was providing updates and tips on its Facebook

The unofficial kickoff for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will run an hour longer, in response to the possibility of sleet or freezing rain creating a hazard on bridges and overpasses, particularly north of the city. But longtime followers said the celebratory free breakfast has endured plenty of bad weather.

The colder it gets, the hotter the tacos and coffee seem to be, said Bill Massey, chairman of the Cowboy Breakfast Foundation, which provides scholarships to culinary arts students at St. Philip's College.

Temperatures once fell to the teens in the event's early days at Central Park Mall in the 1980s.

It rained, sleeted and it snowed all three, Massey recalled.

This year's event is in the parking lot of Cowboys Dancehall, 3030 N.E. Loop 410, at Interstate 35 North. Volunteers will begin serving breakfast at 4:30 a.m., but will keep serving through 9:30 a.m., or until all the free food, including 45,000 tacos and 5,000 pastries, is gone.

The event also features live music and a cow chip contest, now moved back an hour to 8 a.m. The breakfast draws up to 50,000 people, and always gets at least 30,000, even during freezes and heavy rain, Massey said.

It's been warm in recent years. We were due for a cold one, he added.

U.S. women have won a medal in every Olympics since the sport was introduced in 2002.

The U.S. men's team had little success until Steven Holcomb piloted his four- man USA-1 sled to a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics -- the first U.S. Olympic gold medal in men's bobsled in 62 years.

Holcomb and Nick Cunningham will pilot the two U.S. four-man sleds in Sochi and also two of the three two-man sleds. Cory Butner will also drive a two-man sled

Curt Tomasevicz, Steve Langton and Chris Fogt will be the push crew on USA-1 for Holcomb, who leads the combined and two-man international standings.

One of the main reasons that I bought these caps was because they showed in the pictures to have five lug nuts. The five cap looks better than the four cap. Other than the misrepresentation with the picture, they are excellent quality. They must change the picture.

Since of the description,we planning the hubcaps would be chrome, as a substitution for they were plastic. Description said they were 13 inch, but subdue didn't fit the wheels on my car, even though I plugged in the year, etc. the fact with the intention of they wouldn't fit the wheels on the car owing to them totally unbefitting. Disappointed.

Orange Bowl 2014: Has Urban Meyer Lost Big-Game Edge?

Everything was going Urban Meyer's way to start his career at Ohio State. He was 24-0, and it appeared that no one could beat his Buckeyes from the Big Ten.

Two games later and two Top 15 teams have now come out victorious over his Buckeyes, as Clemson beat OSU, 40-35, in the Orange Bowl on Friday night.

Meyer is now on a two-game losing streak after seemingly doing no wrong during the Buckeyes' 24-game win streak.

How the last two losses have happenedquestionable play-calling on offense and a lack of taking advantage of opportunitieshave some questioning if the magic of Meyer in big games is gone.

For as much as the past two games matter, it's not just those losses that give us clues that Meyer's big-game edge may have slipped.

If you go in the way-back machine and enter 2010, you see the big-game edge crumbling in his final season at the University of Florida.That team went 8-5 on the year and just 4-4 in SEC play.

More importantly, Meyer's Gators went 0-4 against Top 25 teams that season, and a negative trend was being set.

Perhaps that was the beginning of the end for the legend of Meyer as nearly invincible, especially coming off a loss in the 2009 SEC Championship Game.

Yet,there was no questioning Meyer's Buckeyes during the 24-game win streak, as they went 5-0 against Top 25 teams.

However, those were just regular-season games, and when championships and BCS games were on the line for the first time, the Buckeyes let every opportunity slip through their fingers.

In the Big Ten title game it was scoring 24 unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead, only to see Miller and the offense sputter out in the fourth quarter and the defense get gashed for 17 unanswered points for the 34-24 loss to Michigan State.

On Friday night in the Orange Bowl, it was a lack of an ability to score when Clemson made mistakes that cost them dearly.

It started early on, after getting a safety and pulling the game to 14-9, the Buckeyes went three-and-out on the following possession. Opportunity No. 1 missed.

Early in the second quarter, Clemson was knocking on the door for a touchdown to make the game 21-9. Then Ohio State freshman safety Vonn Bell made a great pick at the 1-yard line. What happened next?

You guessed itanother Ohio State three-and-out and a chance to take the lead gone. Opportunity No. 2 missed.

Fast forward to the last two minutes of the game and Ohio State is down 40-35, needing a defensive stop like yesterday. They got just that courtesy of a C.J. Barnett interception of Tajh Boyd and a return inside Clemson territory with 1:27 left in the game.

Two plays later and Braxton Miller badly misses a receiver in the post and it winds up in the hands of Clemson's Stephone Anthony. Opportunity No. 3 missed, and game over.

In both of the losses, Ohio State was given every opportunity it needed or hoped for, and nearly every time it couldn't come through in the clutch.

That's unlike the Meyer teams of the past. Heading into this year, Meyer had lost just one conference championship game his teams played in and was 7-1 in bowl/national championship games.

Even the conference championship game situation suggests that Meyer's big-game edge is slipping. He's currently on a two-game losing streak in that department, losing to Alabama in 2009 and Michigan State this season.

It all leads to Meyer being just 5-6 against ranked opponents in the past three years.

Panicking over two games, however important they are, may seem a bit crazybut when you're Meyer and expectations are Big Ten titles at a minimum and national titles preferably, losing the first two cracks at big games doesn't cut it.

Meyer will have plenty of time to correct the current trend, but losing a few more big games on the national stage will certainly make the folks in Columbus more than unhappy.
